Municipality of Worms

About  Worms
The City of Worms is a local authority in the south west of Germany. As one of Germany’s oldest cities it consists of 13 urban districts plus the city centre and is part of the region „Rhein-Neckar“. Within the city area (about 10.000 ha) there is a population of 83.000 inhabitants. Service businesses, logistic companies and chemical industries characterize economics in Worms.

Concerning climate protection the City of Worms runs a wide range of activities that are all based on the “climate protection and energy efficiency concept”. This concept was approved by the city council in 2010 and has two main aims: To Reduce carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions by 10 % every 5 years and to supply the city’s electricity consumption by 100 % of renewable energies by 2030. Measures to meet these targets are for example in the fields of
  • energy consumption of schools and administrative buildings
  • city-wide analysis of roofs for photovoltaic
  • raising awareness
  • round table of local companies
  • energy-efficient residential development

Worms and the RENERGY project
The main role of the City of Worms in RENERGY is to be a partner in two Thematic Groups (TG 2 - Market Uptake and TG 3 - Community Involvement). Of course the city of Worms expects to benefit from the exchange of experiences and the know-how transfer. The collaboration with regional and local authorities as well as research institutes all over Europe is a great opportunity. We are highly interested in the exchange of knowledge in the case studies, for instance in the topics of sustainable residences and energy efficiency in housing. This will support the city’s climate goals set in the climate protection concept.
The mid term event in 2013 will be set in Worms.
